Waterloo is the fifth largest city in Iowa, with a population of nearly 70,000. Originally known as Prairie Rapids Crossing when the first residents settled there in 1845, the name was changed by Charles Mullan after he petitioned for a post office in town. He was charged with deciding the name of the town, and after flipping through names of other post offices, supposedly settled on Waterloo because he liked the way it sounded. Experiencing two large surges in growth, the first with the railroad, and the second with the manufacturing boom after WW2, Waterloo today is remaking its economy to be more diverse after the exodus of manufacturing in the 1980s.
The Waterloo Center for the Arts is the anchor of the Waterloo culture scene. Among the art collections at the center is the largest collection of Haitian Art in the entire country, and many local and Native American art work as well. The recently opened Phelps Youth Pavilion houses an interactive science museum that features multiple daily science experiments for children to participate in, space for an art gallery, and the facility also boasts an outdoor amphitheatre. The Waterloo Community Playhouse, the oldest theatre in Iowa, hosts performing arts of all types throughout the year. The Grout Museum of History and Science is a favorite for field trips for surrounding communities, and, along with the Bluedorn Science Imaginarium, they round out a very diverse and intellectual cultural base.
The Lost Island Water Park, which is Iowa’s largest, is probably the favorite recreational activity of children of all ages. The park boasts ten different water slides of all shapes and sizes, from 6 person tubes to a 45 mph plunge, a lazy river, and a massive wave pool. In addition to the wet fun, the park also boasts one of the largest go-kart tracks in the Midwest with Monaleo Speedway. Combine that with a pair of 18-hole mini golf courses, and a massive arcade, and there is enough here to keep kids of all ages entertained for days on end.
