City Background and History

Huntington is the second largest city in West Virginia, with a population of almost 50,000. As the center of the largest metropolitan area in West Virginia, with nearly 370,000 people, Huntington borders nearby Ohio and Kentucky. The city dates back to 1775, when it was founded as Holderby’s Landing. The city really took off thanks to Collis P. Huntington, one of the big four of ‘western’ railroading. His C&O railroad allowed for the growth of the city, and it was named after him when it was formally incorporated in 1871. Huntington was known for being the second city in the country, after San Francisco, to get the electric streetcar. Though the streets cars are almost all gone, Camden Park, the amusement park built in 1903 and one of the oldest parks in the world, was built to encourage ridership on the trolley. Today, the city is in the midst of a revival, being reborn after the manufacturing that defined much of the region for the 20th century left the area.

Huntington remained strong during the economic downturn of the past few years, adding jobs while most of the country lost them. This was thanks, in large part, to the opening of the Pullman Square Town Center, which revitalized the downtown area, so much so that the city proper saw its first population increase in nearly six decades. This explosive growth has continued with reconstruction of large areas of the business district, with many new businesses opening shop in the past few years. Nearby Huntington Civic Arena, which was recently renovated, is one of the highest rated arenas in the country, and, combined with the Huntington Mall, makes it a center of the area’s shopping. Marshall University, located in the city, brings thousands of students, professors, and brain power into Huntington, making the city one of the most educated in the state. The city still does benefit from a large manufacturing base, thanks in large part to the Port of Huntington located on the Ohio River, which is the 8th largest port in the country.

The city is also home to a large amount of historical significance, including the downtown region, which is a historical district with over 100 buildings being included in the area. Of particular note is the Keith-Albee Theatre, an art-deco style theatre from the 1920s, which was the second largest theater in the world when it was built in 1928. Recently restored, the theatre is hosting plays, music, and concerts for people from all over the region.

Whether interested in an old fashioned city center, or just wanting to live in a city full of prosperity, Huntington is the place for you. Contact Huntington auto shipping companies today for their expert help in relocating you to this great city.
