Davenport is the third largest city in Iowa, with a population of just over 100,000. Davenport anchors the so-called ‘Quad cities’ of Davenport, Bettendorf, Moline, and Rock Island; the combined size of which is over 350,000 people. Settled in 1805 and incorporated in 1839, Davenport grew to regional importance when the very first railroad bridge to cross the Mississippi River, which Davenport was founded on, was built in the city in 1856. Viewing railroads as a threat to their way of life, a steamboat captain rammed his boat into the bridge just weeks after it opened, though the bridge remained open for business. After a declining manufacturing base in the late 20th century, Davenport has seen revitalization in recent decades, and the downtown region was named an ‘American Great Place’ by the American Planning Association in 2011.
The citizens of Davenport pride themselves on their ability to enjoy outdoor recreational activities regardless of season, and the city gives them plenty of opportunities to do just that. The numerous parks are filled all spring and summer with children playing baseball and Frisbees with friends and family. Parks of all kinds boast aquatic centers, botanical gardens, ice skating rinks, skateboard parks, a zoo, tennis courts and numerous outdoor theatres that host all sorts of performances throughout the season. There are ample paths and trails for biking, walking, and running, and these trails range from urban paved paths to more rugged trails outside the city proper.
Winter brings a rare sight in Davenport; hundreds of bald eagles make the banks of the Mississippi River their winter breeding grounds, which is a sight that, once seen, will be very hard to forget. Not to be outdone by New York City, Davenport offers its own balloon parade every Thanksgiving that brings out many people despite the chilly weather. And, each December, the annual Davenport Parks and Recreation Silver Skates Competition is a ice-skating competition that brings out amateurs of all ages and offers a chance to compete in this very large event.
