The fifth largest city in the state of New Mexico is Roswell. Though its population is only 50,000, it is a city known by most throughout the country. Founded in 1869, the area started as a stopover with just a post office and a small hotel. The area actually remained quiet until World War II, when a POW camp was built in the area. German prisoners of war actually built most of the infrastructure of Roswell during this time, including banks and shopping centers, as well as laying roads, water, and electric lines. The area was also home to much of the early rocketry work done in the country, with nearby Walker Air Force Base being the center for such operations in the 1940s-60s. The area, for better or for worse, depending on which citizen you ask, is most famous for the alleged UFO crash that happened here in 1947. Today, the area is still defined by the crash, and a large tourist industry has built up around this pleasant retirement community.
No one disputes that an object crash-landed in Roswell some time in the early summer of 1947; but, the real question lies in the object’s origin. The United States Armed Forces maintains that it was an experimental high-altitude weather balloon, which was part of a classified program named Mogul, which attempted to use microphones to pick up on Soviet atomic testing. UFO proponents believe that, instead, a UFO crashed at the site, and the craft, along with alien bodies, was recovered from the area and covered up. Regardless of the veracity of the UFO claims, the city of Roswell has embraced the phenomenon wholeheartedly, and, today, the area could be considered the UFO capital of the world. Numerous UFO-themed conventions and symposiums, as well as many UFO-themed shops, restaurants, and events that take place here year round.
But, the area is much more than just the home of a supposed UFO crash 60 years ago. The area is home to the Roswell Museum and Art Center, which, in addition to being a historical and art museum, is also home to the Robert H Goddard Planetarium and an educational art center with classes and interactive exhibits. If you are looking for a little peace and relaxation, Bottomless Lakes State Park is full of crystalline lakes that look like jewels, which are fed from underground caverns. Don’t let Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge’s name deter you, this area is beautiful and full of natural fauna and flora to view.
