City Background and History

Essex is the second largest city in Vermont, with a population of 20,000. The city was incorporated in 1763, and named in honor of the Earl of Essex. In 1892, the Village of Essex Junction was incorporated completely within the city limits of Essex. This separate municipality was created to provide services for people in the downtown core, such as water and sewer services, that the rest of the surrounding townsfolk did not want to pay for. Over the next 50 years, the two evolved, with the outliers in the city of Essex now desiring all of the services available to those in the city of Essex. Since 1958, the two sides have voted on merging into one community multiple times, but both sides have never agreed in the same vote to combine the town. The most recent vote in 2006 was the first time both sides had finally agreed to merge, though a re-vote narrowly overturned this decision and, thus, the two cities remain separate. Today, the city and its village form a vibrant pair as a beautiful community off the shore of Lake Champlain.

Like many towns and cities in Vermont, Essex’s greatest treat may be the extensive recreation opportunities available to its citizens. The largest contributor to this access is the impressive Lake Champlain, which lies just to the west of the city. The largest lake in New England by a wide margin, the lake offers nearly unlimited marine activities. The boating on the lake is unmatched anywhere in the area, and fishing is available year round by boat or ice fishing in the winter. Likewise, many parks and beaches dot the largely undisturbed coastline, offering swimming and relaxation during the warmer months. The Green Mountains nearby also offer year-round entertainment. Hundreds of miles of walking, hiking, and biking trails weave throughout the nearby mountains, and, after the snow begins to fall, they turn into some of the best skiing anywhere in the Northeast.

Within city limits, you’ll find a boisterous parks and rec system as well. A dozen parks offer any outdoor activity you could desire, from your standard walking paths and basketball courts, to more organized activities like flag football leagues and even a co-ed adult mud volleyball tournament. Swing by the city’s Sand Hill Pool and Sprayground for some exercise or cooling off when the weather is hot. With a lap pool for serious swimming and a sprayground to keep the kids entertained, you can’t go wrong with this great location.
