Aberdeen is the third largest city in South Dakota, with a population of 40,000. European inhabitants in the area date back as far as the 1820s, though these were just passing fur traders. The permanent settlement of Aberdeen was in 1881, and it was named after the town of the same name in Scotland a few years after the first settlers made it to the area. Aberdeen became known as the ‘Town in the Frog Pond’ due to an unfortunate quirk of geography in the town. The town was founded during a dry spell, on what was assumed to be dry land. When heavy rains came, the residents realized that the center of downtown turned into a giant pond, flooding the area. The pumps the citizens had at the time were not sufficient to keep the water out, and, after deliberation, it was decided to funnel the water into an artesian well that was dug. Unfortunately, drilling in the area opened an underground stream with such pressure that it shot out of the ground, erupting into a geyser, which flooded the town even worse. The problem was eventually solved shortly thereafter, and Aberdeen had both a working water system and a dry downtown.
The Aberdeen of today is host to a large variety of activities, industries, and businesses, despite the fact that by many people’s standards it may be more of a town than a city. This is due to Aberdeen’s role as the hub of northern South Dakota, supplying the area for hundreds of miles in each direction. This includes large shopping malls, two hospitals, a developed transportation network, as well as numerous recreational opportunities. The city is home to 20+ tennis courts, three golf courses, indoor and outdoor hockey and ice skating rinks, and skateboarding parks, all of which are nestled inside of hundreds of acres of city park land. Also included in the park system is the Family Aquatic Center, which just opened in 2007 and features competitive lap pools, water slides, concessions, kiddy pools, and even a lazy river. There are also public boat ramps and lakes that offer fishing, swimming, and beaches for residents to enjoy throughout the year, though not much more than ice fishing and snowmobiling are happening there in the winter.
Aberdeen is a city that takes its role in providing services and goods for its citizens very seriously. The city has received national acknowledgement for its strong education system, quality of its public art and facility offerings, as well as the dedicated outreach programs targeting the youth of the city.
